What is that?

MDR1 for "MultiDrug Resistance" is a genetic mutation causing sensitivity to certain drugs. This mutation affects many breeds of Shepherd dogs such as the Collie, the Border Collie, the Berger Blanc Suisse, etc...

This discomfort does not cause any change in the health of the dog, it can however cause serious symptoms that can be fatal if certain molecules are administered.

Definitions:
Homozygous mutated: -/- meaning the dog has both MDR1 alleles. He is said to have reached MDR1 and systematically transmits 1 MDR1 allele to his descendants.
Mutated heterozygote: +/- meaning the dog has 1 MDR1 allele. He is a healthy carrier and can 50% transmit 1 allele to his descendants. He is considered to be at moderate risk.
Normal homozygote: +/+ which means that the dog does not carry the mutation, it is said to be Non-carrier, so it does not pass it on to its descendants and is not at risk.

Namely : more than 70% of collie herds (whether Scottish or American) carry at least 1 MDR1 allele

Livestock management :

This is not a rare mutation, most breeders still do all types of matings because it is long and difficult to select healthy breeders. We cannot get out of reproduction  whatever the breed and even less the collie which 70% of the world's carrier livestock. It would be too great a loss of genetic heritage which would jeopardize the breeds affected by the MDR1 gene.

This is why it is very important for the breeder that the breeders are tested, and that he informs future families to keep it under control to prevent the family from being in the dark and giving a drug containing one of the molecules at risk to a puppy -/- .

Then for breeding, it would be necessary to make sure to only cross between them healthy dogs (+/+), or healthy carriers (+/-) with healthy subjects (+/+ ), or a dog affected (-/-) with healthy dogs (+/+)  because, If we want to eliminate the anomaly, we can admit all matings which will only give descendants (+/+) or (+/-)

IMPORTANT FOR ANY ANESTHESIA , ask your veterinarian that your Collie be intubated with a gas anesthesia relay + monitoring of heart and respiratory rate.
If not equipped; do not hesitate to have your dog operated in another clinic that is.
